Real Talk: How to make your makeup mask-resistant

Since we are all wearing masks for the time being, beauty trends have been focused on eye and brow makeup. Sometimes, though, we want to wear more face makeup, but then it would just transfer to our masks instead! As a PV girl, I still sometimes wear makeup under my mask and have learned a few tricks to help my makeup stay put on my face and not turn my mask into an icky mess. Here are some of my tried-and-tested tips to make my makeup more mask-resistant!

Skip the foundation and use a pore-blurring primer or a sheer powder

While we love how flawless our skin looks with foundation, a good amount of it will really stick to the mask no matter how long-wearing it is. And worse, it might look uneven if it fades more on the lower half of the face than the upper part.  Instead, stick to a primer or a sheer powder with pore-blurring or light-reflecting properties. If you have oily skin, choose one that will help control oil, too. I like the Laura Mercier Foundation Primer (P1,900 at Rustan’s). A sheer powder with silica like the Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Powder (starts at P1,400 at sephora.ph) or Althea Petal Velvet Powder (P230 at althea.ph) does the job, too. Or even better, layer both products for smoother looking skin.

Make your setting spray your new best friend

If you must wear foundation or other face makeup, make sure to use a setting spray after each layer of makeup. This way, each layer really sets first before you apply more makeup. My favorite ones include the Urban Decay All Nighter Long Lasting Spray (starts at P910 at sephora.ph) and Ellana Stay Fresh Setting Spray (P599 at ellanacosmetics.com)

Ditch your usual blushes and lipsticks for lip and cheek tints

Sadly our favorite powder and cream blushes and our bullet lipsticks are likely to transfer to our masks. Instead, choose lightweight tints that you can use for both your cheeks and your lips for minimal staining. I love the OG lip tint Benefit Benetint (P1,190 at sephora.ph) and Colourette Colourtints (P299 at Shopee and Lazada).

Invest in a 3D mask

Because wearing masks have become a necessity, there are so many designs to choose from now! For makeup lovers, the so-called ‘3D masks’ are a great choice because it sits away from your nose and mouth to make it more breathable. Because of this shape, lipstick doesn’t touch the mask and won’t smear everywhere. Lately, I’ve been obsessed with masks from The Masq Collection (starts at P350 at themasqcollection.com). They have a snug fit at the top of my nose and under my chin but have a lot of breathing room on my nose and mouth. Plus the designs are very stylish!

Keep in mind that these tips won’t make your makeup completely mask-proof, only mask-resistant, meaning some of your makeup could still transfer to your mask. However, these tips will help minimize any transfer of makeup and keep it on your face for longer. So if you’ve always wanted to wear makeup under your mask but have been hesitant, you can now do so without worrying!

I would love to know about your own tips too, so please leave ‘em in the comments.
