Review + Swatches of The Disney Cruella Collection by MAC

It’s hard not to think of Cruella De Vil when the subject of female villains comes up, more so when it’s specifically about their beauty. Her look - black-and-white hair paired with a red lip - is an iconic one. This is why when Disney announced their live-action film Cruella, it’s no surprise that MAC Cosmetics collaborated with them to celebrate the rebellious, edgy, and glamorous villain.

How does a beauty brand thrive for 170 years? Kiehl’s has the answer

A beauty brand that’s older than 100 years is already in rarefied air. But traveling through time to still be relevant after 170 years is a monumental achievement in itself, one that Kiehl’s carries proudly! The brand actually started as a pharmacy by John Kiehl in New York’s East Village in 1851. It was in 1921 when Irving Morse took over that it started selling beauty products. With his pharmacology background, he formulated Blue Astringent Herbal Lotion and Creme de Corps, two products which Kiehl’s still has on their shelves as we speak. The first Kiehl’s apothecary also still stands in the same spot in New York!

Vivace: Lift, tighten, and improve skin texture in one go at Belo

Being in your early 30s marks the beginning of one’s first encounters with aging. It starts flexing its muscles on you around this time and while some signs of it can easily be swept under the rug, some tend to show themselves on your face, making them harder to ignore. New scents from Jo Malone London: Yellow Hibiscus and Red Hibiscus

Hibiscus or gumamela blooms year-round in the Philippines. Here it grows with barely any prodding, so you can easily find it in many homes or even just by the country roads, tended to by only sunlight and the rain that falls on the earth. As a child I loved playing with these brilliant blossoms. I would put one in my hair as I ran across the streets, drenched by the sun and carrying the simple knowledge that everything was right in the world.

An open letter to brown lipstick

Before you whirled into our lives like a tornado in 2015, you were just a half-forgotten 90s trend. You were something our mothers and aunties wore on their lips in oxidized moldy photos of when they were young. (Remember when people printed out photos and kept them in physical photo albums?) You were something we only saw in old movies and magazines along with jumpers and boyish hair cuts. But Kylie Jenner changed all that with the launch of her lip kits.

Why retinol is a life-changing ingredient for me as I journey through my 30s

When I first heard of retinol, I was struggling with major bouts of adult acne that wrinkles and pre-mature signs of aging were the farthest thing from my mind. Even as I was pushing 30, I was fixated on my hormonal imbalance and how I can make my skin smooth and problem-free again. What got me to finally take the plunge and try out this ingredient was an article I found online that said it can also help me when it comes to my breakouts.

Can we please stop hating our bodies

The other day I was watching a BBC documentary about apetamine. It’s this Instagram-famous drug in syrup form that makes people gain weight in order to achieve a “slim-thick” body. Think Cardi B, Kylie Jenner, and Kim Kardashian! It was appalling to find out that this drug is so easily available online and off, and that the side effects are not a joke.

I tried a new product promising to help me sleep better — here is my honest review

Being on a work-from-home setup has its own fair share of challenges. I thought that not having to wake up early to brave the traffic would mean that I would have more time to take it easy and get some more sleep, but that couldn’t be further from the truth! As the lines between work and life get blurred, I find myself saddled with a big workload that I often stay up until the wee hours in the morning.

Totally worth the splurge: The Sunday Riley Sleeping Night Oil

When I went to New York in 2018, I bought a Sunday Riley Power Couple Duo set on a whim. It contained a 15ml tube of the Good Genes (review in the link) and a 15ml dropper bottle of the Luna Sleeping Night Oil. I was a bit hesitant to try the products first since I’ve never tested Sunday Riley before, but boy oh boy my mind was blown! My skin got so nice! I’ve repurchased the Good Genes a few times since then. I did, however, balk on buying the Luna Oil as I felt it was too expensive at P3,375 for 15ml, or P225 per ml.

When it comes to beauty, is imitation the sincerest form of flattery?

With so many beauty brands on the market, it’s not surprising for one brand to remind yourself of another. Whether its packaging or the shade range, it’s nothing new to see similarities between or even among beauty brands.

However, given the similarities, one couldn’t help but wonder if they are merely a coincidence, an inspiration, or a blatant imitation. This begs the question - where do we draw the line between inspiration and imitation?

The Derma Corner: All about adult acne

Which age group comes to your mind first when we talk of acne? Teens? Adults? Acne may first appear during the puberty period but do you know that there’s also such a thing as adult acne? I don’t get a lot of cases of it in my practice but it has a big impact in the quality of life of adults, may lower their self-esteem and/or may cause depression or anxiety.

Who I am, a year into the pandemic

When the pandemic first broke out and the government put Metro Manila on strict quarantine, I thought it was only going to last for a couple of weeks. Then I thought it would only be a couple of months more. A year later, we are still under lockdown. There is fortunately an end in sight as vaccinations start rolling in, giving immunity to many of my friends and family, but it’s still a long way out to “normalcy”. I don’t even think that’s possible anymore. I know I’m not the same.

Women today are faced with difficult decisions. The world we live in imposes gender norms that we are expected to conform to. We fear being judged which makes us constantly doubt ourselves.
