My Epiduo Experience: Day 1

Yesterday, I finally consulted a dermatologist after years of trying to wing it on my own. I’m not proud of the fact that it took me so long to just book that session. But I’m so glad I did it, because Dr. Erin Tababa-Santos (aka The Nerdy Derma, you can find her booking info there) is great! She was able to diagnose my skin and hair issues quickly, and have a great medication plan in place for me. I am so excited to see the results, especially for my acne problem! It’s going to take a month or two, but I’m really looking forward to not having to have to use concealer every time I leave the house.

One of the medications that Dr. Erin prescribed to me is Epiduo. I’ve heard about it, but I’ve never really researched it nor tried it before. I’m very careful about using medication that is not prescribed to me, so having the dermatologist’s go-ahead is all I needed. I thought I’d document my experience for you guys to help you make decisions about this product.

Of course, I recommend you see a dermatologist before trying Epiduo or other acne medication. Here’s how it’s been like for me!

But first, what is Epiduo?

Epiduo is like the dynamic duo of acne treatment. It's a topical gel that combines two powerhouse ingredients: adapalene (a type of retinoid) and benzoyl peroxide. This tag team works wonders in tackling those pesky pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads. Adapalene makes our skin cells turn over more regularly to keep pores clear, while benzoyl peroxide helps to kill bacteria that can cause acne. It also helps to break down whiteheads and blackheads.

What's Epiduo For?

Primarily, Epiduo is a go-to for those battling acne. Whether you're dealing with occasional breakouts or a more persistent form, it’s designed to show those blemishes who's boss. It’s particularly effective for inflammatory acne – you know, those angry, red spots that seem to have a life of their own.

Where to buy and how much?

Epiduo is available in Mercury Drug, Watsons, and other drugstores. I admit, I was mildly shocked by how expensive it is! As of yesterday, it’s P2,045 for a 15 gram tube in Watsons. I honestly didn’t know it was THAT expensive. It’s a drugstore medication with basic ingredients so that’s why I’m surprised.

How to Use Epiduo

Epiduo is not your average over-the-counter pimple cream. It's needs your commitment and careful application. Here's a quick guide, as instructed to me by Dr. Erin:

  1. Start Slow: Introduce Epiduo to your routine gradually. Begin with applications every other night or as advised by your dermatologist.

  2. Use Only Once A day, At Night: Because of the sensitizing nature of the active ingredients, it is not recommended to use this product in the daytime.

  3. Cleanse Gently: Before applying, ensure your skin is clean and dry. Use a mild, non-drying cleanser – let’s not aggravate our skin more than necessary!

  4. Moisturize: Epiduo can be drying, so use a moisturizer FIRST before applying the gel on top, to act as a buffer. Hydration is your best friend here.

  5. Use Only A Small Amount: Pump out a single line, 1-1.25 centimeters in length from the bottle. You don’t need much.

  6. Avoid Sensitive Areas of the Face: Don’t apply the Epiduo gel under the eyes and around the corner of the eyes, around the side folds of the nose, and the sides of the mouth. Otherwise, it might sting and irritate those sensitive areas.

  7. Be Vigilant With Sun Protection: Your skin becomes more sensitive to sunlight with Epiduo. Always wear sunscreen during the day.

My Day 1

I applied Epiduo for the first time last night. My routine is as follows: I cleansed with the Skin Poem Facial Wash (it’s a basic, low pH cleanser), exfoliated with the Ole Henrikssen Glow Toner (Dr. Erin said I could continue using this glycolic toner), Shiseido Ultimune Serum, Drunk Elephant Protini moisturizer, and then finished everything off with a tiny bit of the Epiduo gel.

I did not experience stinging or irritation, probably because I'm used to strong exfoliating products already. I’ve also used retinol before, and the Glow Toner itself is quite intense. I did notice that my existing pimples are less inflamed than the day before, which is a good sign.

Is Epiduo For You?

Epiduo could be your ticket to clearer skin, but remember, it's not a one-size-fits-all solution. Consulting with a dermatologist ensures you're using it safely and effectively. Plus, they can provide insights tailored to your unique skin needs.

So, yes, while Epiduo might just be the skincare hero you've been waiting for, approach it with care and professional advice. Your skin is as unique as you are, and it deserves the best treatment crafted just for it. Stay radiant and keep glowing! 💖
