Tutorial: Retro Summer Look

The perfect summer look for me would be ultra-light, quick to apply, and fairly sweat-resistant. It would unfailingly involve a punch (or two) of color, just to get into the festive summer vibe. Instead of powder products like eyeshadow and blush, I'd go for a liquid tint on the cheeks and a cream color on the eyes for better staying power.

Hence I've come up with this look featuring a couple of cheap-ass eyeliners. By cheap I mean they are only P150 from Watsons! These eyeliners from a new brand called Essence (blogged it here) and believe you me, they're pretty long-wearing for the price. I wore this to the mall and came home after six hours with intact eyes. I applied primer beforehand though.

Moving along, here's a step-by-step tutorial on how I did my retro summer look. I used Cool Down (electric blue) and Bling Bling (golden copper) on my eyes. Let's begin!

Step 1: I used Urban Decay Primer potion all over my lids to ensure that these cream products stay on. I then picked up Bling Bling and drew it all over my lids, just stopping at the crease.

Tutorial: Makeup for college girls

College is a time to just enjoy yourself. Meet as many people as you can, excel in your interests (academic or extra-curricular), and just have smashing fun! While doing all that, keep your face clean everyday with skincare that suits your skin's needs, and wear minimal, enhancing makeup that can keep up with your busy lifestyle.

How? Ta dah, I made a tutorial! I took into consideration the late nights a college gal would spend on reports (and/or parties teehee), the sun exposure while rushing to classes, and the occasional zits that may pop up. This is also a quick routine with only one basic brush required and fairly affordable product recommendations. Ready? Here goes!

Step 1: Wear makeup that offers some SPF protection, or wear an SPF cream before your foundation of choice. This is a must! Sun damage can show as early as your 20s so protect your skin ASAP. Here I used the Laneige Snow BB Cream with SPF50 because it's in a handy compact.

Tutorial: Bea Alonzo's "The Mistress" makeup

Someone on Ask Liz! requested for a tutorial on Bea Alonzo's makeup on her latest movie,"The Mistress". I thought it was a cool idea! I've been wanting to watch that film ever since I saw the trailer last August. The story seems interesting enough, but I also love how Bea looks so polished and different in it. The makeup she wore really enhanced her beauty which is awe-inspiring considering that it looks like she's not wearing much at all.

I haven't seen the movie yet so I did this tutorial based on the trailer and the pomotional pictures. I would describe Bea's makeup as the Prime Look, which is not the "no makeup makeup" or even the "natural makeup" look. It's done with a heavier hand that focuses on color matching, contouring, and precise eyes to bring out the perfect version of a face (hence "prime").

Don't worry. it's not as complicated as it sounds! I've made a step-by-step tutorial on how to achieve Bea's makeup. Of course I don't look anything like her, but makeup-wise it's fairly near. Let's get crackin'!

Step 1: Bea's skin is super smooth and translucent in the film, so skip the heavy matte foundations and opt for something light instead. I used the Benefit Hello Flawless Oxygen Wow Brightening Makeup. This is a great brightening foundation that looks invisible yet gives good coverage. After concealing, I topped it off with the Palgantong Theatrical Powder to get a smooth and translucent finish.

Tutorial: the No Makeup Makeup Look

The "no makeup" makeup is a look that enhances your skin and features in a way so subtle that it's almost invisible. Your skin is just supposed to look healthier and glowing; your eyes, defined but without any obvious lines. This is the look where your natural beauty takes the spotlight - with a little bit of help, of course!

Now there are dozens of ways to do the no makeup makeup. The common denominator is the focus on skin that looks like skin, which means that you should avoid matte face makeup. The goal is to even out the skin and conceal blemishes and dark areas strictly as needed. Brows are also meant to be soft while the lips and cheeks just slightly tinted or colored with an MLBB lipstick.

Wanna see how I do it? Let's get crackin'!

l

Step 1: Use a brightening tinted moisturizer with a light coverage. I am currently loving the VMV Hypoallergenics Skintangible SPF30. It has barely any coverage but it evens out my skintone wonderfully. It's illuminating, too.

Step 2: Conceal only where needed.

Tutorial: Silvery smoky eyes

Hi folks! How are you holding up? The rains have somehow abated (we're on alert level Yellow according to PAG-ASA) so that should be a relief. Should you be interested in donating relief goods to those affected by the flooding, you can find a consolidated list of relief operations here. There may be one in your area.

Back to lighter things! Today I'm going to show you how to do silvery smoky eyes using some Revlon products that have been recently released. It's a light smoky eye so you don't have to worry about it looking garish, but it does give your eyes some definition and mystery. Perfect with LBDs, sequined outfits, and general evening wear! If you're going to a wedding or party, this is a great look to try.

I've already done my face makeup and eyebrows. Ready? Here's how I did my eyes!

Step 1: With your finger, smooth out an eye primer all over your lids. This will help intensify and extend the wear of your eyeshadow. I used the Revlon PhotoReady Eye Primer + Brightener.

Step 2: Pick a soft silver eyeshadow to use as lid color. I'm using the Revlon ColorStay 16 Hour Eye Shadow Quad in Siren here

How to use lipstick as a blush

Okay so you packed your makeup kit with the utmost care because you want to look your best in a meeting or an out-of-town wedding. But alas! You forgot your blush! You brought three lip balms, gazillions of brushes and all manner of eyeshadows, but you didn't bring something as basic as a blush. What do you do?

a. Fall into pieces and cry like a little girl.

b. Run to the nearest mall or drugstore and buy a blush. Being late be damned.

c. Borrow a blush from an acquaintance/ semi-stranger and revel in what might be a bacteria-infested party on the compact.

d. Use your lipstick as a blush!

Kidding, just kidding. The best answer is D. You can actually use your lipstick as a blush, provided that it's matte or satin, that is.

How to apply loose mineral foundation

One of my readers requested for a tutorial on how to apply mineral foundation. I thought that was an interesting question. After all, mineral foundation IS different from normal powder foundation and therefore requires a slightly separate set of tools and techniques.

But wait, why use mineral makeup? It depends on your needs and preferences. MMU is great if you want a smooth, luminous finish without all the added chemicals traditional foundations have. You also don't need to use a lot of MMU to get the skin you want, which means that you only use a thin layer that lets your skin breathe.

Unlike normal powder makeup where you just pat it on to get your desired coverage, you have to sort of break down and really spread mineral makeup all over your face. That's why even if you only use a small amout of mineral powder (well, good MMU anyway), you get a lot mileage out of it. It's basically concentrated pigment, unlike traditional makeup where there are comparatively more binders, extenders, and preservatives included in the formula.

That said, I'd just like to share the tools and techniques I use in applying loose mineral foundation!

Choose your weapon

Dense brushes allow you to break down and spread the MMU efficiently.

Quick tips on red lips (and products to try)

Are you considering red lips for Valentine's Day (or any day)? A lot of women are a little scared of this color because it's loud AND fussy, but I think it's in keeping with the occasion's theme. A bit of fuss during the first application, when done right, is worth it since you probably don't have to apply it again during the day.

Here are some quick tips as well as some lipstick suggestions:

  • Prime your lips with balm. Don't slather on too much. A very thin layer is enough to moisturize; too much and your lipstick will just stay on top and slide off.
  • Apply a red lip liner just a little bit inside your natural lip line. Red can be an overwhelming color and you don't want your mouth to look like one huge stoplight! Thin but juicy red lips are more sophisticated compared to thick red ones.

Shaded with lip liner

The prime look

The so-called "prime look" is the makeup that's put together to enhance your natural features. The colors used are the ones nearest to your actual skin tone and color, and they are applied in such a way that will highlight or recede your features. Okay, now that sounds more complex than it is, but it really isn't.

A prime look is simply the look that makes you appear your best. In other words - perfect glowing skin, neutral eyeshadows, flattering blush, and lipstick close to the real color of your lips. It's not that hard to achieve with makeup you probably already have!

Now the makeup I use for my personal prime look varies from time to time, but the technique I use is the same. Read here on how I fake the perfect skin. For eyeshadows: I only use two or three - a light brown on the crease, a dark brown to contour, and a beige to highlight. Then I use black eyeliner and mascara. Easy peasy!

Face: Smooth-365 Peptide Serum as primer, MAC Studiofinish Concealer, NARS Sheer Glow Foundation in Barcelona, Colorescience pressed foundation in California Girl

Graduation Makeup Tutorial

It's graduation season! Sigh, just thinking about it reminded me of my own graduation last year. It was a solemn event shared with friends and family, who were all so proud of me, and me of them. I've done so many things since then, things I never even once considered while I was studying Political Science at UP Manila. Well! That's another story, haha.

I made a tutorial for all you young graduates out there. Graduation makeup, of course, should fit the occasion - formal, somber, respectable, but not necessarily boring! Hence, I used gold eyeshadow to bring out the eyes while the rest of the colors (different shades of brown) were used to contour the eyes to get a more photogenic effect.
