Why the Origins Original Skin Matte Moisturizer is like a blurring primer, too

One of the things that I wish I knew sooner in beauty was to shop for my skin type. In my rookie years as a skincare enthusiast, I would spend H O U R S watching and reading reviews of popular products that unfortunately turned out to be bad matches for my oily, acne-prone skin. I now mourn for all the time and money I could have saved! Fast forward to today, I have learned to tune out the hype and just listen to my skin and what it needs.

As someone who’s born into the oily life, finding the ideal moisturizer has not been the easiest journey. I yearn for hydration but I scorn the grease. Mattifying moisturizers to me, therefore, are a godsend. My first impression upon using the Origins Original Skin Matte Moisturizer with Willowherb (P2,000 for 50ml) was that it smelled of orange juice spiked with a little bit of vodka. This moisturizer has a yogurt-like texture that is cool to the touch and spreads easily. It absorbs in a minute and feels almost like a light layer of powder when it dries. I was initially worried that this wouldn’t layer easily but I was proven wrong as it never pilled on me under sunscreen and makeup.

The Origins promise? To give skin the glow it’s been looking for. This will supposedly boost moisture, even tone, refine texture, and visibly minimize pores with Willowherb for a look that’s soft, smooth, fresh and vibrant. As for my experience, I find this to only be mildly hydrating but it truly does minimize the appearance of pores and texture. With dimethicone being the second highest component on the ingredients list, the Original Skin Matte Moisturizer functions almost like a light moisturizer slash blurring/mattifying primer in one!

I can honestly say that using this moisturizer for the past two weeks has been an enjoyable and refreshing experience. However, the formula appears to be disconcerting for long-term use. I found out that the smell of vodka can be attributed to denatured alcohol, which dries out the skin and weakens it over time. While Willowherb (Epilobium Angustifolium Flower/Leaf/Stem Extract) is touted as an excellent skin-soothing ingredient, it might be too far down the list to be truly effective at what it does. There is also a long list of fruit and plant extracts that come before Willowherb including essential oils like orange, lemon, bergamot, and clove which are likely added as fragrance. The ingredients list of this moisturizer is a bit like playing irritating ingredients bingo but remember that skin sensitivities vary from person to person.

Have you tried the Original Skin Matte Moisturizer with Willowherb yet? How did it work for you? And if you’re a fellow oily skin sufferer, what are your favorite mattifying moisturizers?
