Maine for MAC, Take 2: Review and swatches of Maine Mendoza's hot red MAC collab
Maine fans say hey! After two years Maine Mendoza gets another shot at #MACMaker - check her first color here. Not only is she the first influencer to do a second collab with MAC, she’s also the first to launch a Lipglass! Are you guys ready?
Maine single-handedly caused a nationwide scarcity of MAC Ruby Woo when she came out as Yaya Dub in Kalyeserye, a segment of GMA Network’s noontime show Eat Bulaga. The character’s kooky humor was endearing to many, and the cool-toned red lipstick she wore became synonymous to the actress herself. Irreverent to the core, Maine unexpectedly released a nude shade for her first #MACMaker last 2018, and it sold out in under a minute.
But it seems red is inescapable for her, and this year, Maine releases a signature red for her MAC Maker collaboration. The MAC Lipstick in @mainedcm (P1,100 for 3g) is a vampy, plum-red matte, that is easily wearable across different Pinay skin tones. It seems to stain the lips (yay!) but has a lot of transfer (boo). Personally, I haven’t had a MAC Matte in a hot minute because I prefer their Retro Mattes more, so I can’t say if it’s par for the course. The texture of the lipstick is quite creamy, so do consider using a lip liner to keep it all in place.
The MAC Lipglass in @mainedcm (P1,200 for 3.1ml) is a slightly lighter red shade than the lipstick. The Lipglasses I grew up with had sheer pigmentation, so I was pretty shocked to find this deep, almost acrylic pigmentation. This particular Lipglass also feels so much lighter than what I last tried about 15 years ago (wow). I honestly thought this would be an underwhelming “plus” product because I never got over how thick and goopy the old Lipglasses felt like, but I suppose they’ve been reformulated? I highly recommend trying out the @mainedcm Lipglass for a pigmented, comfortable gloss product!
Layered together, the two make quite a dramatic statement! The deep shade of the matte lipstick goes very well with a matte finish. I have a bit of unflattering texture I couldn’t get off my lip, so it was harder to pull off the matte lipstick alone. But layered with the gloss, I get the same sultry feel without really sacrificing any of the drama.
During the launch party, Maine shared that she was so excited to “do something bold”. She already got her fix of playing with a soft color last time, and she was excited to create a louder color. She thinks dark red looks awesome on everyone, from fair to deep skin tones. To wear @mainedcm confidently, her tip is not to overdo your eyes. Check out more about what she has to say in our Project Vanity Facebook live!
Over the intimate dinner, the story of Maine’s second MAC Maker collaboration was shared in detail. Afterwards, a star-studded guest list proceeded to view a quick demo of the new products care of makeup artist RB Chanco.
MAC @mainedcm is available in Lazada and all MAC stores in the Philippines.
