Review: Elizabeth Arden’s New Retinol + HPR Ceramide Capsules

Elizabeth Arden has long been a skincare pioneer with over 120 years of expertise, but this tenure does not limit their commitment to pushing the boundaries of skincare innovation. Their newest product introduces the next generation of retinol in the form of their trademark capsule: the Retinol + HPR Ceramide Capsules Rapid Skin-Renewing Serum (P7,850/60 capsules, P4,150/30 capsules). The potent yet gentle formula is intended to firm the skin, reduce the appearance of dark spots and pores, and improve clarity, tone, and texture to reveal radiant and revitalized skin.

At the launch, expert dermatologist Dr. Sheena Joyce Bautista gave guests the lowdown on everything you need to know on retinol.

What is a retinol?

Retinol is an umbrella term for Vitamin A that come in various levels of potency. These retinols work to increase cell turnover that in turn make the skin smooth by removing and improving the appearance of fine lines. Retinol use also increases collagen production in the skin that improves firmness and elasticity. And as we all know ‘Collagen is life!’

The new Retinol + HPR formula achieves a balance of gentleness and potency that is perfect for retinol newbies. The strength of HPR (high performance retinol) is tempered with a sustained release that produces a gentle effect on the skin preventing irritation.

Why are people afraid of retinol?

Retinol has a bad rep because it can have certain side effects known as retinization. Retinization can come in the form of purging, breakouts, or irritation and flaking and can all happen in the first three to four weeks of using retinol. But what Elizabeth Arden wants consumers to know is that it’s about finding the right formula and routine for your skin. These products represent the next evolution in anti-aging skincare while staying true to the heritage of transformative power.

The new Retinol + HPR formula also comes in a water cream Retinol + HPR Ceramide Rapid Skin-Renewing Water Cream (rustans.com) (P6,200/50ml). The combined power of the duo is meant to visibly reduce wrinkles, while being gentle enough to use both day and night (alongside SPF). The perfect routine for both experienced and first-time retinol users.

Putting the New Retinol + HPR Capsules to the Test

I have tested gentle retinols before, but as a retinol newbie with sensitive skin I had my doubts I would be able to handle a so called high-potency retinol. The formula is largely what made me reconsider; alongside the retinol and HPR, the capsule has a mix of peptides and ceramides that strengthen the skin barrier and aid in smoothing fine lines and wrinkles. It also has bisabolol and oat to soothe the skin and minimize irritation as well as vitamin E to defend against dryness.

I followed the guide religiously and started slow with twice weekly application. The first thing I noticed was an immediate warming sensation on the skin, it was definitely not a burn but I could tell I was using an active. I then applied moisturizer for hydration and to reduce any resulting dryness.

In the first week of use I developed dry spots and areas around my forehead had started to flake. Knowing this was to be expected, I applied moisturizer and slugged with Vaseline on these new problem areas. I continued to follow the guide and upon my second week the flaking and dry spots had fully resolved and went away. I had been blessed that my ‘retinol uglies’ were light and occurred in between events I had to cover!

Even after just two weeks of light use, I can tell that I already like the new retinol + HPR ceramide capsules. My face looks and feels plumper and my skin has never been dewier, giving me a general glow of health. But the area that I am most surprised that had the greatest improvement were the backs of my hands! A retinol tip I had picked up from TikTok advised to apply excess retinol to the back of your hands and now they’re the smoothest and softest they’ve ever been. My hands had always been dry and wrinkly due to skin asthma but I’ve observed a great improvement since applying this little trick.

So, whether you’re a maestro with retinol or a newbie like myself always remember to use SPF when you’re on a retinol journey and avoid layering with other acids and exfoliants. Additionally, please consult your pediatrician or dermatologist before adding retinol to your skincare routine if you are pregnant or actively trying to get pregnant.
